Gold

Gold in skincare feels luxe. It’s super fancy, and right now it’s popping up all over the place. Although does it actually do anything? You see, gold has a long history attached to it and historians have long maintained that civilisations such as those in ancient Egypt (yes Cleopatra was a fan), Rome and China, thought gold carried medicinal properties. Which is why it’s often been used to treat a variety of skin conditions and body ailments.

Tony Huang, Brand Manager of Japanese skincare brand SASSOU Japan also told me that the ions present in pure gold “makes it a superb heat conducting metal”. Which is why when you apply it to the skin’s surface it can draw heat, stimulate blood circulation and help rejuvenate tired skin cells – and  basically make you look younger and brighter.

“With similar qualities found in certain Chinese herbal medicines that help with healing and recovery, gold has the power to magnify the effects of skincare ingredients by targeting and awakening weakened structures in the skin. Studies (more here) also show there is a similarity in the wavelengths at which negative ions are released, allowing gold to enhance particle circulation in the body and reinvigorate cellular bio‐electric currents which naturally weaken as a result of ageing.”

Therefore, there could be method behind the madness. Plus there’s more to adding a little gold to skincare than meets the eye, because it has anti-inflammatory properties and is an antioxidant too. Tony adds that if you do want to include gold in your skincare routine some of the benefits you’d see could include:

  • A reduction in acne and skin allergies
  • Increased skin cell metabolism and secretion of toxins
  • A reduction in the appearance of fines lines, blemishes, wrinkles and dark spots
  • Improved skin hydration and moisture retention
  • A reduction in collagen depletion
  • Increased cell renewal for a healthy, luminous glow
  • A reduction in inflammation and
  • Improved elasticity due to the activation of the body’s basal cells.

Which is why it’s often used in anti-ageing products.

Although WARNING: because when shopping for skincare with a hint of gold you can’t just run out and buy any old thing. The trick to possibly gaining some of these benefits is that the products need to say they’re formulated with 22-24k gold – and nothing less.

Why?

Well, because 22-24k gold is the best type of gold to be safely absorbed by the skin, meaning it’s relatively harmless.“Gold leaf with a smaller carat value has more impurities, is less safe and sometimes contains copper, which can be toxic in high doses. When selecting products with gold leaf, make sure to get gold that is as pure as possible. This means it should be 22‐24 carats,” Tony tells me.

Another reason I’m a fan of gold is that anybody can add it into their skincare routine as it’s safe for all skin types and complexions. I’ve actually been using products with gold in them for years and have always loved how brighter and firmer they leave my skin feeling. So let’s chat through a few of my favourites below.

The Peter Thomas Roth 24k gold line has a cult following. So if you haven’t tried it, you should. I’m currently obsessed with the 24k Gold Pure Luxury Lift and Firm Cream – $60.00 which acts as a highlighter and makes your skin look even and glowy. I just apply it under my BB cream in the morning although I’d probably also wear it on it’s own. It reminds me of the Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector – but with added benefits. The 24k Gold Mask – $108.00 from this range is amazing too. I used to use it during my third trimester to help my face look like I wasn’t stressed out and emotional. Then continued to use it once Amina was born to help pep up my face/make it look like I’d had sleep.

Sassou Japan’s Gold Shimmering Essence – $200 is pricey but it’s filled with plant based collagens and hyaluronic acids – in fact all of the ingredients in this product are next level. It doesn’t really feel like an essence either… and is more like a serum. After cleansing and toning I apply it and it instantly hydrates and brightens my skin without leaving any residue and makes it easy for other products to be applied on top. Also, I sometimes I just use this instead of a toner.

And the Lonvitalite 24k Gold and Collagen Eye Masks – $35.00 (pk 6) are so bomb, which is why I only save these for special occasions. However, they’re the best at prepping your eye area before a big event. Also, celebs like Jessica Alba and Rose Huntington-Whiteley are fans …so if these are good enough for them! Honestly though, they’re just small patches you whack on under your eye that are filled with collagen and gold to help plump you up, add hydration and leave you looking a lot brighter than before. They’re also super thick so they won’t fall down your face. The Lonvitalite Collagen and Gold Lip Masks – $35.00 (pk 6) are fun to use too – but a little more fiddly. You’re meant to leave them on for 20 minutes, but it feels slightly awkward wearing them and you can’t talk. Although your lips do end up super plumped up following they’re use. I’ve loved using these through winter to beat dry/scaly lips.

Anyway, whether you’re a fan of the gold trend or not, the moral of this post is that you shouldn’t run out and buy any old product just because it has gold in it. Make sure you check the ingredients label first. Especially if it’s overly priced – which many of them are. However, quality products do actually provide some anti-ageing benefits to the skin. So hopefully you find something that works for you!
